Britney Spears is on top

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

030904-N-9593R-008 Washington, D.C. – Recordin...Image via WikipediaBritney Spears’ personal troubles haven’t affected her celebrity status, according to USA Today’s annual Celebrity Heat Index. The index measures how much exposure stars get through internet and print reports and it seems Spears earned the no. 1 spot for the second year in a row.

Following in second place is Angelina Jolie, whose life and romance with actor Brad Pitt is constantly making headlines. Jennifer Aniston takes third place and Pitt fourth.

Making the list for the first time is ‘Twilight’ actor Robert Pattinson, who made a splash after playing Edward in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire books. ‘Gossip Girl’ star Blake Lively is also a newcomer to the index as well as President-elect Barack Obama.

Keanu Reeves at The Lake House London premiereImage via WikipediaThe Baltimore Celebrity Examiner (huh?), had some of the following items:

Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer have a public love fest. Aw, did anyone really believe Tom had it in for Lauer after that self-deprecating monologue at the Friars Club Roast? BTW, I predict his uncredited Tropic Thunder role will bring Cruise an Academy Award nod for best supporting actor and, yes, he will walk away with the Golden Globe. You heard it here first.

Caught this on the local WBAL radio morning show. Could Jennifer Aniston’s Act Two with John Mayer be more about red carpet rivalry than “what I did for love?” Perhaps. But I doubt it. No woman takes a player like that to meet her father unless she truly has designs on him.

Pre-publicity buzz for the new American Idol season (has it really been eight years … no wonder I’m beginning to think of the show as last year’s outfit stuffed in the back of my closet) includes Paula Abdul attacking producers for allowing obsessed fan Paula Goodspeed to audition. Goodspeed was found dead of an apparent suicide outside Abdul’s apartment. Other format shake-ups include the addition of Kara DioGuardi as fourth judge, a Top 36 semi-finalist segment, and Hollywood week in actual Hollywood.

Can’t help but be skeptical over Sir Paul’s claim of politicizing The Beatles. Having lived through that era, I can attest to Paul McCartney’s image as “the cute Beatle” and John Lennon as “political rabble rouser,” but with two of the four gone and Yoko Ono’s much later addition, this large swath of canvas is wide open to interpretation.

Memorabilia of the biggest celebrity of 2008 hits D.C. stores and I’m not talking Will Smith.

Grey’s Anatomy fans now have more dirt to dish about T.R. Knight’s departure from the show. This smells like Knight’s publicist working overtime at better spin. If you ask me, I’d say there’s too much “diva derivative” in the casts’ drinking water.

NY Daily News is playing roulette with Page Six. I, for one, will miss the daily missives of Rush and Malloy. Now relegated to a weekly Sunday feature, The Gatecrasher takes over as celebrity basher extraordinaire. Jury still out, but I’m putting this questionable strategic positioning on the “we shall see” pile.

All over the news I’m seeing reports of abandoned pets. The connection to celebrity gossip is tenuous at best, but had to scratch this champion of defenseless animals itch. Have a heart, people. Make haste to thy nearest shelter.

No sympathy whatsoever for Keanu Reeves. His new movie gets a dis at USA Today and boo-hoo, being a celebrity is such a drag. Sing it in the key of E, surfer boy. Maybe a wayward violin player will take up the cause.

Secret Page Six Facebook page announces reported engagement of Gossip Girls hottie Leighton Meester and boyfriend Sebastian Stan. These blind items are too delicious to ignore, yet unfortunately offer very little in the way of real sustenance.

The Desperate Housewives star scouted out cashmere scarves and spent time texting on her phone during her visit.

• Amanda Bynes, still going strong with Doug Reinhardt. The two made an after-midnight showing at Crown Bar in West Hollywood, taking a table by the deejay booth. According to an onlooker, they were completely involved with each other – and Bynes skipped the drinks, focusing solely on Reinhardt. When he would get up to chat with others, she would watch him and smile, staying seated. The Hairspray actress also joked around with Brody Jenner and Frankie Delgado, who were at their table. Bynes seemed to fit right in with the Hills guys, the onlooker says: She had everyone smiling and laughing.

• Chace Crawford, dining with a group of friends and celebrating the opening of Shang Restaurant in the Thompson LES Hotel in New York. The Gossip guy noshed on dishes like curry lobster bisque with soft scallop and dim sum vegetable potato dumplings. Also there the same night: Molly Sims, who enjoyed dinner with a group.

The DWTS finalist was in his element, hosting a party for Zen Green Tea Liqueur at Yamashiro restaurant in West Hollywood. O’Day also had a special date for the night: her dog, Ginger, whom she kept hidden in her purse!

Top 5 Celebrity Scandals of 2008

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

:en:Britney Spears on the :en:...Baby One More...Image via Wikipedia#5: Anne Hathaway had a great year career-wise, but her personal life crumbled when after breaking up with long-time boyfriend Raffaello Follieri, he was arrested. Anne’s place was searched, bad publicity surrounded her and the police even took her diary trying to find clues to support a case for money laundering and fraud against the Italian.

#4: The Hills were alive with a lot of drama this year! Lauren Conrad got caught in another scandal—not related to Heidi Montag or Spencer Pratt this time—when roommate Audrina Patridge accused her of “hooking up” with boyfriend Justin Bobby. LC denied it and even dedicated a blog to Audrina telling her she should know her better. Audrina talked about the rumor in every TV show and moved out.

#3: Miley Cyrus’ Vanity Fair semi-nude pictures, taken by famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, were the cherry on the scandal cake after pictures featuring Miley in a green bra invaded the Internet. Miley’s parents were criticized for exploiting their teen daughter, the Disney Channel was urged to drop the actress from Hannah Montana, Cyrus apologized and blamed it all on Annie.

#2: Heath Ledger’s mysterious death and Mary-Kate Olsen’s involvement in the scandal still remain a question mark. Why did the masseuse who found Heath’s body in his New York apartment try to call Mary-Kate before calling 911? Why did MK refuse to talk about her relationship to Heath? Scandalous!

#1: Britney Spears’ rocky year takes the price for biggest scandal of 2008. The night that several police cars arrived at her house in California followed by tens of paparazzi, the world stopped fearing a sad ending for the princess of pop. The picture of Britney being taken into the hospital almost naked and completely disoriented is the most shocking picture of the year—specially because she has managed to recover and record the album of the moment.

Guy Ritchie and Madonna divorce – he gets 76 Million

Guy Ritchie Walks Away From the Divorce With $76 Million
Tuesday December 16, 2008
Guy Ritchie hit the jackpot when he decided to call it quits with his wife Madonna. After months of mud slinging, Madonna, 50, and Guy, 40 have finally reached a settlement in the divorce. When all is said and done, Guy will walk away with between $76 million and $92 million, according to People.

Original rumors had the amount somewhere in the $30 million ballpark. Mind you, the payout will definitely not be in the form of one fat check. Some of it factors in the value of their home in western England as well as their London pub. Do you think he’ll take some of the cash and hit up Vegas?

Lindsay Lohan’s girlfriend Samantha Ronson gets sued

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson at TV Guide'...Image by Rachel Kramer Bussel via FlickrFrom the Los Angeles Times:

Lindsay Lohan’s gal pal Samantha Ronson in big legal spat

The DJ is suing the lawyer she hired to stop rumors circulating about her and Lindsay Lohan. He sues back. It’s all fodder for blogs.

BY HARRIET RYAN | Los Angeles Times
December 11, 2008

On a summer day last year, Martin Garbus, a veteran attorney from New York, went to a beachside cafe in Santa Monica to meet a young woman looking for a lawyer.

Impressing prospective clients was not difficult for Garbus, whose resume reads like a history of the late 20th century. From Lenny Bruce’s pornography trial to the publishing of the Pentagon Papers to the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, the septuagenarian could boast a hand in some of the biggest civil liberties cases in the last five decades. He has dodged segregationists’ bullets in Mississippi, organized migrant workers with Cesar Chavez and helped craft the Czech Republic’s Constitution.

The woman sitting across from him that day was Ronson, a professional DJ recently thrust into the gossip blogosphere for her rumored romance with actress Lindsay Lohan. Ronson, 31, was enraged by some particularly nasty stories posted online about her relationship with Lohan and wanted to sue.

Ronson was irate, and on the recommendation of a friend, turned to Garbus. Then 72, he had a vaunted reputation — Fortune called him “one of the country’s most able 1st Amendment lawyers” last year — and a practice that included high-profile clients. At the time he met Ronson, he was representing Don Imus in a suit against CBS.

Difficulties emerged early on. In court papers in the malpractice suit, Garbus alleged that Ronson often didn’t return his calls or answer e-mails. She forgot meetings and kept him waiting. Garbus had represented many people whose fame was based on unquestionable achievement — Andrei Sakharov, Samuel Beckett, Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, Spike Lee — but Ronson, whose celebrity was rooted in titillation and limited largely to consumers of pop culture, often didn’t pick up the phone when he called, he alleged.

Regardless, the defamation suit progressed. Celebrity Babylon agreed to issue a retraction and an apology in exchange for Ronson dropping her claim, according to court filings in the malpractice suit. But that deal didn’t interest Hilton, no stranger to defamation suits.

“Perez Hilton doesn’t back down to anyone,” said Bryan Freedman, one of his attorneys.

“I’m tired of all this [stuff]. I wanna drop it,” she wrote.

“Will I be getting paid,” the lawyer replied.

There was no immediate answer.

In the end, neither Garbus nor Ronson attended the hearing. Lawyers from a local law firm hired by Garbus to assist in the case sat at the plaintiff’s table to hear the judge rule in Hilton’s favor. He dismissed the case and subsequently ordered Ronson to pay the blogger’s attorneys nearly $85,000.

Less than two weeks later, Garbus sued her in New York for close to $142,000 in fees and services. He later dropped that suit. In May, Ronson filed suit against Garbus in Los Angeles County Superior Court, contending that his incompetence had lost the case against Hilton and asking for damages in excess of $300,000. Among the allegations was that Garbus failed to fulfill his duties as her attorney because he was focused on collecting his fees.

Tom Colicchio sued by waitress

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

I found this article on celebrityblend.com, which made me laugh out loud (or LOL, if you prefer):

Tom Colicchio Being Sued By Waitress Alright. This one’s a little personal. I try to distance myself emotionally as much as possible when writing celebrity gossip stories, but Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio is the man. That bald-headed culinary genius makes me happy every Wednesday night at 10 P.M., and some gold-digging waitress floozy isn’t going to put a damper on this boundless man crush.

According to TMZ, Nessa Rapone is accusing my man Tom of sharing her tips with management, refusing to pay overtime and not compensating her cleaning her work uniform. Colicchio has already responded calling the lawsuit “baseless.”

First of all, really, Nessa? You’re going to slander Tom with allegations of stiffing his own employees and then complain about having to dry clean your own uniform? Really? That’s like going to divorce court and citing infidelity, spousal abuse, and drinking the last glass of orange juice that one time you were real thirsty during the summer of 1986. Give me a break.

Tom Colicchio is a class act. He’s a wonderful chef and a better businessman. There is no way he withheld a couple hundred dollars of overtime compensation. Does anyone really think he would risk his entire empire to screw over some whiny employee who only wanted a few to be paid minimum wage?
